Eastern Maine Railroad Development Commission

VISION: An efficient intermodal transportation network supporting eastern Maine's economic and community development that includes roads, air, water, and rail systems.

MISSION:  To work as a partner with Maine Department of Transportation and the private sector to identify and develop opportunities for freight and passenger rail service on the Brewer to Calais rail corridor.

GOALS:

  1. Determine cost and benefit of rehabilitation and operation of the Brewer to Calais Railway
  2. Identify and promote potential rail use
  3. Act in an advisory role to the Maine Department of Transportation, Rail Division, as proposals for line use emerge
STRATEGIES:  Ask the Maine Department of Transportation:
  • for basic custodial service of the railway
  • to list examples of passenger, excursion, recreation, and freight trains to Eastport (e.g. New England Southern, Blueberry Coastal Railroad)
BENCHMARK: The percent of all manufacturing freight shipped in the state that goes by rail, water, or air will improve from 18% in 1991 to 24% in 2000 (MEGC)

MEETINGS: Meetings are not held on a regular schedule and the site of the meetings may vary from meeting to meeting.  Roland "Skip" Rogers at the Federal Marine Terminal in Eastport is the chair for the group and can be contacted at (207) 853-6096 if you are interested in the activities of the EMRRDC.  To be put on the mailing list you may contact Down East RC&D at (207) 546-2368 or via e-mail at dercd@downeastrcd.com
