DownEast & Acadia Regional Tourism (DART)

DART began informally in 1995 when local chambers of commerce in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor began talking about how collaboration throughout the area would help everyone.  As a result of these informal discussions, all the chambers in Washington and Hancock County were invited to cooperatively market the region under DART’s umbrella.   Chambers have historically been the most active players, but DART welcomes participation from “all business organizations and non-profits (such as, but not limited to Chambers of Commerce) in the DART region, who have an interest in planning for tourism growth and/or promoting tourism in the region”.  DART’s purpose is:

  • to represent these business organizations with the State Office of Tourism
  • to promote, support, and manage regional tourism and commercial interests while protecting  and preserving the region’s natural resources, historic integrity and cultural character and enhancing economic vitality
  • to coordinate with other regional and state planning and development programs
  • to promote economic well-being through coordinated promotion and marketing and development of tourism products, i.e. via regional information and visitor orientation services to the public.
